Morgellons fact or fiction

At this present time the medical world is undecided as to the validity of Morgellons disease as an actual disease or ailment. Many doctors have cited other well know skin complaints whose symptoms can be seen as similar to the ones experienced by Morgellons sufferers. For the majority of cases the diagnosis has been self made, mainly due to the fact that doctors are reluctant to admit that Morgellons is an actual complaint.

For many years Morgellons disease had been treated as a delusional parasitosis (a form of psychosis or false belief) and so had not been given any serious thought or investigation. It has only been within recent years that the medical world has begun to open its mind to the possiblity of a real illness being present, rather than any delusional paranoia

Today, the Morgellons Research Foundation claims that this condition is an emerging infectious disease, however, there is no available evidence to confirm this. Some health professionals hold the belief that the signs and symptoms of Morgellons disease indicate a specific condition that is likely to be confirmed by future research. Most doctors point out that Morgellons disease shares characteristics with various recognized conditions, including attention-deficit disorder, chronic fatigue syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder, Lyme disease, and a mental illness involving false beliefs about infestation by parasites.

So, is Morgellons an actual illness or is it just a convenient label to put on a series of ailments which all share the same general symptoms. Many of the symptoms attributed to Morgellons can indeed be found in patients suffering a variety of already diagnosed and well documented medical complaints, but there are some aspects of Morgellons that, if correct, do tend to point to a new and strange type of disease.

The main problem that the medical world has in accepting Morgellons as a new and bona fide disease is that most reported cases are the result of self diagnosis and although these reports come mostly from well meaning and otherwise reliable sources, the lack of proper medical qualifications only serves to undermine the evidence.

Morgellons disease has allegedly been found in thousands of patients in Florida, Texas and California and in several other countries, including Canada, the UK, Australia, and the Netherlands. The disease, is a parasite-like infection that literally makes the infected person's skin crawl. Itching occurs which can be so strong that some Morgellons sufferers have been claimed to have committed suicide, although there is no reliable evidence to support these claims.

Below is a list of known illnesses that doctors believe are more likely to be the true cause of symptoms reported by supposed Morgellons sufferers.

Somatization Disorder
dermatological and neurological disorder
hypochondriacs
psychosomatic illness
scabies
Psoriasis
delusions of parisitosis
allergic dermatitis
Lyme disease
